Abstract:

Eclipta alba (Family – Asteraceae) commonly known as false daisy grows in tropical and subtropical countries at an altitude up to 2000 meters and is commonly found in waste places, marshy lands, hedges and roadsides. It is commonly known as ‘Bhringrajaa’ (Sanskrit) and ‘Bhangra’ (Hindi). The aim of the present study is to evaluate analgesic and anti-inflammatory activity of ethanolic extract of Eclipta alba. In addition the extract was also studied for its acute toxicity effects and preliminary phytochemical screening. The analgesic effect of the plant extract were investigated by hot plate and tail immersion test and the anti-inflammatory effects were investigated by employing acute inflammatory model (Carrageenan induced paw edema). The ethanolic extract at a dose of 200 mg/kg showed significant analgesic activity whereas the same extract at a dose of 200 mg/kg body weight exhibited significant anti-inflammatory activity in the given animal models in a dose dependent manner.
